Zumba for Kids: A Review of Zumbini in Virginia Beach

By Amber Heckler

By now chances are you have probably attended a Zumba class, let alone heard of Zumba. On the off chance that you just arrived to this planet, Zumba is a dance based fitness class, which leads me to Zumbini. Zumbini is Zumba designed for 0-3 year olds wrapped in a 45 minute energy packed class taught by the incredibly warm and patient, Wendy Jaffe. When I was asked to pop in on a class with my 3 year old and my 18 month old and write a review on Zumbini, I couldn’t have been more excited.

Upon arriving at the dance studio, we were greeted by Wendy and the rest of the class. Many toddlers were running around and catching up with each other before class started. My oldest took her shoes off and immediately threw herself into the mix. The littles were dressed in everything from jeans, to comfy clothes, to magical tutus.

Class started in a seated circle with a song welcoming each little by name. I was nervous wondering what would I do if my girls did not fall in line and participate with the other children. What if I couldn’t get them to sit or dance with the rest of the children when it was time? I was shocked and amazed how focused the toddlers were, mine included.

Once the song was done, and each child had been introduced and welcomed by name, it was up on our feet. What followed next was lots of movement and singing.

All of the children seemed very happy and comfortable in their elements.  Looking around I saw parents completely focused on their children as well as their physical activity. It was great! So many smiling faces, parents included. There was drum play.

At the end of the class, the lights were turned off, the children became quiet, and Wendy sang us a song to say goodbye. All of the littles seemed to immediately calm down, and focus on Wendy’s voice and soothing words. Class was over and we had all survived. Not just survived, thrived. While some of the children did exactly what they were told when they were told, others seemed to move at their own pace and in their own time… but I think that was the point.

When asked if she enjoyed the Zumbini class, my wise beyond years 3 year old said the following, “I wanna do that again momma.” So there you have it, straight from the mouth of babes. If you would like to give Zumbini a try {which you totally should}, you can find Jaffe teaching Zumbini classes to littles on Friday and Saturday mornings at Dance Space off of Great Neck Road.   Her next 10-week session begins in January and registration is $185 per child and $50 for additional children.  Registration includes classes, a songbook and two CDs!  Give Wendy a call at 757-268-2604 or find her at Zumbini with Wendy on Facebook!
