New exhibition opening May 24 – January 4, 2015

Today my family got a sneak peek of the new exhibition at the Mariners’ Museum, opening May 24th! At Savage Ancient Seas: Dinosaurs of the Deep, you are invited to enter the deep, dark prehistoric world of carnivorous marine reptiles, amongst others with over 20 large-scale skeletons and replicas!

Located in Newport News, my kids and I arrived at the Mariners’ Museum and were immediately greeted with friendly faces and helpful assistance. It was our first time at the museum and without knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised that they had designed much of this exhibition with children in mind.

Exterior

I was a little fearful that my kids (all 3 and under) would be a little frightened of the dinosaurs, but instead they were ecstatic!

Ex1

We saw gigantic flesh-eating fish, flying reptiles with 3-foot skulls and the biggest sea turtles to have ever lived.

Dino5

Tylosaur, the largest marine lizard ever found in North America at 45-feet long.

Take your photo with the largest turtle ever found or inside the jaws of a Megalodon.

Play the role of paleontologists and dig for fossils in a pit that is made, not out of sand, but from a material called crumb rubber.

This really is fun for the whole family! On opening day, be one of the first 50 families to visit the exhibition and receive a special gift and enter to win a Dinosaur of the Deep prize package that includes a family membership. (One gift per family.) All weekend (Saturday – Memorial Day) you can create prehistoric origami creatures, make-and-take home your own “fossil” impression, dig for fossils and go on a scavenger hunt.

If you get hungry while you are there, stop on into the cafe for a quick bite!
